Renovation of Historic Homes.

There is great allure in owning a historic home, but it comes with the responsibility of finding the balance between thoughtful restoration and modern upgrades. Kerns Family Construction offers top to bottom renovations and guidance on the most important elements to consider when undertaking a renovation of time-tested abode.

We believe that time-tested and broken-down Historic Homes deserve to be given another chance, to be called “Home” again and to be loved. We pride ourselves in the renovations we do to bring these homes with so many stories to tell, back to life. We know that once these Historical Places are destroyed, there is no getting them back. We save as much as we can of the original structure of these homes, even if all we can save is a single piece of siding.

Our town is important to us and to those who live here. We love our Main Street businesses, the citizens, and its history.

  • IDENTIFYING THE HISTORIC ELEMENTS:  Some of the defining factors that make a home historic are important to note and should be preserved. They can be window and door sizes, covered porches, wood species and other materials that reflect that time period.

  • PATIENCE: Often times historical homes have undergone several renovations throughout the years. It takes time to get to the bones

  • MODERNIZE: Updates and additions should flow in harmony with the homes original design.

  • DON’T COMPROMISE: Care should be taken with the elements that might not even be noticed, but that are imperative to bring the home up to code.

  • ORIGINAL ELEMENTS: When a home is taken down to its studs, components that were previously hidden, like original wood floors, may be usable in the renovation.
